Segway was founded by inventor, Dean Kamen. Inspired after watching a young man in a wheelchair struggling to get over a sidewalk, he invented the first Segway, Segway PT, released to the market in 2001.

Can Electric Scooters Be Used In Australia?

Electric Scooters are considered ‘non-road vehicles’ by the Australian Government. All Australian States and Territories are governed by the Motor Vehicles Standard Act 1989, however rules and regulations defining the use and importation of electric scooters depend on legislation administered by the local council. Here is a summary of state-by-state legislation:

Queensland

Electric scooters (also known as personal mobility devices / rideables) can be used in public spaces and road- related areas in Queensland. However, there are specific rules to adhere to especially riding around pedestrians. When riding in Queensland you must:

•    Not travel faster than 25 km/h

•    Be at least 16 years of age, or 12 with adult supervision

•    Wear an approved bicycle helmet, that is securely fitted, at all times (unless an exemption has been granted for medical or religious reasons)

•    Not carry passengers

•    Not use a mobile device

•    Not drink and ride

•    Have a working flashing or steady white light on the front, and a red light and reflector at the rear when travelling at night or in hazardous conditions.

Electric scooters do not need to be registered, however it is advised to contact your local council to find out if there are any local laws that apply to the use of rideables.
